FAQ

Asked over the fence

The questions neighbors ask when they see a Nisaku tool in action, grouped by topic.

Choosing

Which tool should I buy first?

The NJP650 hori hori knife. It digs, cuts and measures, and covers most planting jobs. Add a nejiri gama for weeding and a crack weeder for paths.

What is the difference between a nejiri gama and a kusakaki?

Both are Japanese hand hoes. The nejiri gama has a 4-inch blade on a short handle for precise work; the kusakaki has a wider 4.75-inch blade on a 12-inch handle for clearing more ground.

Which sickle for long grass?

The NJP130 mikazuki for a clean slicing cut, or the No. 150 saw-tooth sickle if you never want to sharpen.

Steel and care

Will Nisaku stainless steel rust?

Japanese stainless steel resists rust and scratches. Clean and dry tools after use, and they stay bright for years.

What does HRC58 mean?

It is a hardness rating on the Rockwell C scale. HRC58 blades, such as the NJP651 and NJP801, hold an edge longer than softer steel.

How do I sharpen a serrated edge?

With a tapered ceramic or diamond rod, one scallop at a time, from the bevel side.
